You never really own anything!

This week I looked rather enviously at an advertisement by Philippe Pattek, who make fantastic and very expensive watches. A statement caught my eye. “You never really own anything, you merely take care of it for the next generation.”

I also heard someone say recently, “you never really even own your house. Just miss some mortgage payments or city taxes and your ownership will soon be challenged.” So, we think ownership is important, but do we really own anything?

When I was 14 my dad lost his job. We were uprooted from one day to the next and had to move to live with my aunt in another city. I had to leave everything behind that I had: football memorabilia, games, trainsets. I realise that ownership could be lost so quickly. It is the most comforting thought that if you do not own anything, you cannot lose anything!

As an entrepreneur, one of the best decisions I ever took was to transfer all ownership to God, after realising that he owns it all anyway!

Psalm 24 verse one says the earth is the Lords and everything that is in it. Job asked, “Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.”(Job 41:11) Paul said unequivocally, “You are not your own you were bought with a price.”(1 Corinthians 6:19)

The best about giving everything to God, is that it gives it back for me to manage-but now as his partner. In this partnership, he has a part to play and I have a part to play. I cannot do what only he can, and he will not do what I must do. What a privilege to be manager of Gods assets his role is provider leader, guide, helper. My role is to discover how he wants his possessions managed and to be faithful to manage my money time and talents his way.

I invite you to rethink this thought today a few times. What if you see yourself not as the owner of your car, but the manager? And what if you see yourself as the manager of something you don’t own, like the nice park close to your house?

Ownership is access. Imagine, if you didn’t own anything, but have access to virtually everything this planet and humanity can offer, you would own them more than the richest people on this planet will ever own. The whole planet would be ours to use. Relinquishing ownership to God opens the door for us to access the kingdom and all it can offer. (Matthew 6:33)
